LOREM IPSUM
What separates a cosmetic update from a full renovation?
A cosmetic update keeps the plumbing, wiring, and walls where they are and changes surfaces: doors, counters, tile, paint. A full renovation moves fixtures, alters layout, and involves permits and inspections. Budget and timeline differ sharply between the two.
How far ahead should I schedule a remodeling project?
Aim for two to three months before you want work to start. Selection, measurement, and ordering all sit ahead of the build, and The Countertop Guy, LLC books Raleigh, NC projects early so you get choices rather than substitutes.
Do countertops or cabinets get installed first?
Cabinets always. The stone is templated on top of installed, leveled cabinet boxes so the measurements reflect the actual room instead of a drawing. That gap between cabinet day and countertop day is normal, and it is why fabrication cannot start earlier.
What should be decided before demolition begins?
Cabinet layout, door style, countertop material and slab, backsplash tile, flooring, sink, faucet, and appliance dimensions. Late decisions stall the schedule and force substitutions on whatever is still available. The more of that list is settled early, the fewer surprises appear midway through.
How do I choose finishes that still look right in 10 years?
Keep the permanent elements calm and put the personality into the replaceable ones. Neutral cabinetry, honest materials, and simple edge profiles age well, while a bold backsplash or a strong paint color can be swapped out later without touching anything structural.
Does remodeling add value when I sell?
Kitchens and bathrooms consistently return more than most interior projects, though rarely the full outlay. Buyers respond to functioning layouts and durable surfaces more than to luxury upgrades that outpace the neighborhood. Sound work photographs well and shortens time on market.
What happens if something unexpected turns up behind the walls?
Old water damage, undersized wiring, and rot are the common finds. We stop, photograph what we see, explain the options, and price the fix in writing before continuing. Nothing gets buried behind new tile without you knowing about it.
How much of my kitchen will be unusable during the work?
Plan on losing the sink, range, and counters for the bulk of the schedule. The refrigerator can usually be relocated and kept running. Setting up a temporary station in a dining room or garage makes the middle weeks much easier.
Do I need to be home while work is in progress?
Not for the whole day. Being reachable at the start and the end of each day helps, and there are a handful of decision points where a five-minute conversation prevents an expensive rework. Otherwise the schedule runs fine without you.
Who removes the old countertops, cabinets, and flooring?
We do, as part of the project scope. Demolition, hauling, and disposal are handled by The Countertop Guy, LLC across Raleigh, NC rather than left sitting in your driveway. Salvageable cabinets can be set aside for a garage or workshop.
Can I supply my own materials?
Sometimes, and it works best with decorative tile you have fallen for. Structural items are harder, because responsibility for defects, shortfalls, and reorder delays shifts to you. We will tell you plainly where that trade is worth making.
How do you keep dust out of the rest of the house?
Plastic barriers at doorways, covered floors along the route, and vacuums attached to cutting tools handle most of it. Tile and drywall work still generate fine dust, so we contain the room rather than promising a dust-free house.
What is the difference between a licensed general contractor and a handyman in North Carolina?
North Carolina requires a general contractor license once a project’s total cost passes $40,000. Below that threshold, unlicensed contractors may legally perform the work. Trade permits for plumbing and electrical still apply regardless of who holds the contract.
Should flooring run under the cabinets or stop at them?
Running flooring wall to wall costs more material but lets you change cabinets later without patching. Stopping at the cabinet run saves money and works well with tile. Dishwasher height is the detail that decides it either way.
How do I know if my current layout is worth keeping?
Walk it honestly for a week and note the friction. If two people collide constantly, if the refrigerator door blocks a walkway, or if you carry groceries past a hot range, the layout is the problem. New surfaces alone will not fix circulation.
